Authenticity: common denominator for both Love and Fashion.
As Valentine is around the corner, discussing love on this blog is germane. However, as our business is all about fashion, it is more germane to align the two together and this is exactly the opportunity that today’s topic has afforded. Let’s flow together as we examine this authentic relationship between love and fashion.
So what does authenticity mean?
According to the American Heritage dictionary of the English language, Authenticity can be defined as the quality or condition of being authentic, trustworthy, or genuine. It connotes undisputed credibility, genuineness, legitimacy and being the real thing.
The movie ‘coming to America’ describes the quest for true (authentic) love by an African prince, Hakeem (Eddie Murphy). This young prince had everything that most of his contemporaries only had access to in their dreams but something was missing in his life. He wanted true love and for this he was willing to travel to a far country, he was willing to spend as much money as was required, to search out diligently that person whom he can love and that would love him back in return. Though he went through debasing and mostly very embarrassing situations, he managed to find his heart desire; the authentic love of his life.
From this movie we can deduce the following:
Authentic love is expensive not cheap: Hakeem had a girl at his beck and call and he would have just settled for her but he did not because he is a lover of authenticity. He had to spend money, time and other resources to get his desire. This is the same for authentic fashion, it does not come cheap. It does not go for the same price as every other, it is unique in quality and mostly, unique in price.
Authentic love is Scarce not ubiquitous: for everyone who has truly fallen in love, you will easily agree with me that it does not happen every other Friday. True love mostly comes to us once or twice in a life time. It is not every guy you have dated that can be described as authentic love. Hakeem had a lover but it was more of circumstantial love than authentic love (the story of your life, right?). So it is not so surprising that you have to travel the world over to the right places in order to discover authentic fashion and them bring your discoveries home for discerning fashion lovers to appreciate.
Authentic Love is enduring not ephemeral: the story of Romeo and Juliet drives home this point more than any other. Authentic love is not fair weather love. It keeps going irrespective of whether it is rain or shine. Even death do not do it part. This is very consistent with the character of authentic fashion. It does not get torn in the middle of a meeting or in traffic….it is simply durable, to be passed on to the next user and then the next user……..
